About the Author
Brett Arkelian is a record-setting college football specialist (tying the record for the longest punt in the FBS [eighty yards] in 2015) and a professional specialist coach. During his college career, he played for Fresno City College, Lincoln University, and the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), where he received his master’s in Secondary Education. After graduation, he taught World History to high schoolers before his love of football drew him back into the sport as a coach. He started his coaching career at UT Martin in West Tennessee. He has since spent seasons coaching C-USA East Champions Marshall Thundering Herd, then moving onto special teams roles at Rice University and Virginia Tech. He is currently the Special Teams Assistant Coach at UC Davis in Davis, CA.
At Virginia Tech, Arkelian helped Virginia's Tech's Special Teams become the #7 in nation in Special Teams Efficiency (ESPN) during the regular season. lead the nation and ACC in Punt Returner Total Yards - Tayvion Robinson (Regular Season), and coached the top Freshman Punter in the ACC Peter Moore (45.1 Yds. Avg.) JP Romo (17 FGs), & Patrick Mannelly Award Semi-Finalist (Top Snapper) Oscar Shadley.
Throughout his seven seasons of playing (and five years of coaching) high school and college football, including nearly every level of college football (JuCo, DII, and DI) and every position (placekicker, punter, kickoff specialist, and holder) he has seen and experienced the many different situations that specialists go through. This experience, combined with thousands of hours researching specialist techniques and practices, has led to the development of this manual, which provides a foundation on which all specialists can build.
